Smoke Detectors Follow
This information relates to in-unit smoke detectors or common area detectors not part of a central system.
Since 1988, all dwellings in Illinois have been required to have smoke alarms. Starting January 1, 2023, any new smoke alarm installed within a single or multi-family home must be an alarm that features a 10-year sealed battery. Alarms installed before January 1, 2023, are grandfathered into this rule until they exceed ten years from their date of manufacture. Hardwired and smart home alarms are also exempt.
