Google Chat Follow
Google Chat is an instant messaging app within Gmail.
Clicking “New Chat” will pull up an options menu.
Type a name into the menu to start a new conversation with one other person.
To have two or more people included in the same chat, click “Start a group conversation.”
“Create a space” can create a new spaces group. More on Spaces later.
“Browse spaces” allows you to browse the spaces that have already been created. More on Spaces later.
There are several apps compatible with Chat, however, we ask that you only add something to chat that has been approved by leadership. This is due to data permissions that must be granted when adding a new app.
“Message requests” will show any new users that have sent you a message. Google chat requires you to approve their first message before they can chat with you freely in the future.
Within each chat, you also have the following options available.
The plus side on the bottom left will bring up a sub-menu for attaching a Google Drive file or Calendar Invite.
On the right-hand side, you can change text formatting, include an emoji, add a GIF, attach a local file from your computer, or create a Google Meet link.
Spaces are where you can collaborate on long-term topics with teams or specific groups. Your division will have specific spaces for you to join. Also, check out some fun ones like pets or random!
Hover over any message to open the following options.
You can edit any message you have sent with "Edit Message."
Mark any message unread with "Mark as Unread."
"Forward to inbox" will send the message to your Gmail inbox.
"Add to Tasks" will create a new task containing the message.
You can delete any message you have sent with "Delete."
